The monastic retreat of Taktsang or “Tiger’s Nest” is the most famous temple in Bhutan. It is built into a sheer cliff 2,700′ above the Paro Valley. Padmasambhva, the great 8th centure Buddhist saint and teacher, is thought to have landed at this spot after flying over the mountains from Tibet on the back of a tigress, thus bringing the teachings of Buddhism to Bhutan. The primary temple was built around Padmasambhava’s meditation cave in 1684. The only way to visit Tiger’s Nest is to hike two hours uphill, ride a rented horse, or find a magic flying tiger.
