Plus Post Week 6

The Art of the Image/Creating Tension

Wow!

Creating tension. Now that term conjures up so many visions.. and the images highlighting each of the ideas being discussed were fantastic!

I was already familiar with many of the compositional concepts, however I didn’t consider the possibility of using them to “create tension”. Honestly, I’m programmed to dissipate it. How could I create it?

I love that this course is making me go so far out of my comfort zone. Not just shooting people, that by itself is huge, but having conversations with colleagues on “barrios” to check out. Creating tension when every ounce of my upbringing teaches me to avoid it.

I read and reread the main post and the list I created, to make sure I tried every option discussed. Invisible lines, Eye contact (or not) were concepts I tried but didn’t really get a convincing image of. <>

The images this week lacked the spontaneity and energy that I normally associate with a photoshoot. I guess instead of relaxing and letting instincts take over, I am over-keyed and my mind keeps flitting from one idea to another. Music normally helps, but I’ve been running into the worst Spotify playlists for the past few months, or maybe they don’t make good music anymore 😞 I hope it’s just a phase.

Photography-wise I may not be going places, but I’m becoming a pro at getting the cops to follow me around. 😄 😄 😄

Always look on the bright side, eh?

A big Thank You to all the inspiration and the wonderful feedback by teresa pilcher and the mods. The images given as examples make me eager to learn. The images submitted by my co-mentees make me see the world differently. Please smile and maybe, just maybe raise a toast to yourself tonight, for making a difference in my life!

Lessons learned:

Make a list. Things to try, things to look out for.

Review said list.

Take that shot. It’s ok. You could lose on gold just because you are too intimidated by people.

Patience. Patience. Patience. You know this stuff. Just be patient. But more importantly be ready.

  1. I always enjoy reading your Plus Posts!

A great set of images with a diversity of moods, moments, and if there is tension, I can also feel happiness, passion and victory: that is why I prefer your image n° 2 best: hurray!

  2. A great plus post and series of images Lucille Galleli congrats for stepping outside your comfort zone and pushing the limits. As long as we don’t have to send someone to bail you out ;))) Cheers!

  3. Patience and Ready! You have the mix! I like the second one, 3rd and last one a lot! You are on a path I can tell. I feel you are trying to connect with your subjects in different ways. Working out of our comfort zone always a challenge, then one day we look back and say ” I have got this!” what next.

  4. Kym Kamra .. such a kind comment. Thank you. I honestly didn’t see myself making such images and yes, I find myself trying to see things very differently. So glad for this mentorship!

  5. Great diverse selection of images – really well done and seen – you had a great week with these lessons Lucille Galleli – always nice to know there is a police officer around if you need one 😉

  6. Lucille Galleli it is so great that you really take your time to explain your thought processes. I am a list maker and made a list in this week 6 assignment to help me keep the many ideas to hand. It is interesting you are focusing a lot on tension and it is something I went for last year amoungst all the choices. It is a compositional technique photographically and yet emotionally it is something quite different. Some photographers like to focus on the macabre or tense scenes on the street. But here it is a more about an off balance feeling with people being at the edges of the frame or intersecting the edge. Your middle image has the most emotionally tension to me. The second image has a wonderful gesture, an open composition with great storytelling and intrigue as well as being uplifting.
