Week 5. Energy and Motion #FYV2018 – Plus Post

Week 5. Energy and Motion #FYV2018 – Plus Post

After the blur mentorship last year, I knew I would enjoy this week. However I also knew I’d be challenged. Blur has helped me discover the abstract side of photography, however keeping a subject sharp(ish) and discernible while blurring the rest has always been a handicap of mine. And the challenge this week was to do it, with people, while in the street. Talk about pressure.

The shoot took me much longer than normal. Most of it went reminding myself to breathe and relax.

I tried panning, rotate blur and pretty much everything that one could do with a fixed lens. (I really miss my EVIL camera. It was light enough for 1s handheld exposures. And the lens helped me with zoom blurs.) Most of the results were not as I had envisioned them to be. Note to self: Get a new light camera or work on upper body strength!

The interesting thing about this assignment was finding the perfect subject, and the not so perfect background, figuring out which type of blur to use, change settings and fire away. Knowing one’s camera settings is so important.

While shooting blur, I suddenly realised how easily perspective shots came to me. It’s strange how instinct takes over once we set ourselves free of from idea of “doing something intentionally”.

On another note, the cops followed me around. I then stopped and started reviewing my photos in their presence and they must’ve thought, sheesh … she can’t even get a clear shot. They left me in peace.

A vendor who noticed me shooting kept walking back and forth to come into my shots. For all the hard work he did, I might post one of his in the comments. If only he knew he was just a blur to me… lol!

Lessons learned:

Try and go back to the same place. Take in the scene. Understand the flow of traffic. Anticipate the direction in which the subject is going to move. Ask the universe to send the right person along.

Blur is brilliant, but get yourself a lighter camera.

Find a decent playlist. The one I used made me so glum, I could have cried.

Thanks a bunch teresa pilcher and Alex Lapidus. This was definitely a “face down your demons” week for me!

  1. These are certainly some cheerfully-colored demons 🙂 You’ve put so much thought and work into this week; I think you’ll find the practice extremely valuable the next time you go out, and beyond.

  2. Lucille Galleli Love this one Lucille, the textures and the hint of the women is so dreamlike. What can I say! You have once again stepped outside your comfort zones and created some really wonderful images. Colourful demons, I liked that. Great work!!

  3. Lucille Galleli Wonderful write up and absolutely loving the ‘caught in the slipstream’ feel :)) Beautiful colours and I really like how there’s one person (on the edge of the frame) who’s expression you can see and this really helps set the vibe. Fabulous!

  4. Great insights and I agree that knowing your camera really helps tremendously! You made me giggle a bit when you said ask the universe to send the right person along! Great reading and so well done!

  5. This is a wonderful post detailing your experience this week Lucille Galleli!

I really like the image too. Like the strong profile of the person on the left, the stripes in the person in the right of frame and the central entity. That one draws my gaze back, as I see a very peaceful spirit there. Almost like a nun in habit.

Thinking on the new lesson, this also has me thinking on the aspect of tension created by the rule of 3 and open composition aspect with the subject on the right flowing out of frame.

  6. Lucille Galleli What a fantastic and fun post, I’ve had a great time reading it. I see that you have done a very complete and very good job this week, and this picture is the one I like the most. The color palette and that dreamlike atmosphere make a unique image. I also liked the photo of the girl listening to music in the street. It is fantastic how her gesture and isolation stand out despite being such a complex and crowded image.

  7. Love…love your write up Lucille Galleli!! “Ask the universe to send the right person along!” Yes, I relate. There are too many black motorcycles at night!! What happened to firey red? Sheeesh!! You always find the most colorful characters! We’ll have lots of fun when the weather is right!! lol

  8. What great subjects and background. I like the one on the right and how her stripes leak out in waves either side. The gesture of the one in middle is nice touch! A beautiful dreamy effect. You got thinking about the technique used, I wonder if it is side to side with pan!

  9. Enrique Barreiro … am so glad these images are speaking for themselves. I’m delighted with the progress I’ve made via this mentorship. Thanks for stopping by to comment. Much appreciated.

  10. Angelo Gifford … spot on with the technique … I was panning. The camera was a bit heavy so the lines aren’t as clean as they should be 🙂 So glad you like the image 😀
